Pure Potential

Last month I talked about meditation and how to get started in a simple, daily practice. This leads us perfectly to this month: Finding your Pure Potential.

About a month ago a friend of mine suggested I read the book “The Seven Laws of Spiritual Success” by Deepak Chopra. She was reading the same book, not for spiritual reasons per say, but as a different way to analyze her business approaches. Knowing that I too own a business, she thought it would be a pertinent read for me as well. Chapter 1 of Deepak’s book and the first step to success is Pure Potentiality. This might get a little out there for some of you, but just keep reading.

“And when we realize that our true self is one of pure potentiality, we align with the power that manifests everything in the universe” – The Rig Veda (Sacred Yoga Text)

What would happen in your life if everything you did you could do without limits? Often, we unconsciously set limits out of fear. Fear of succeeding or not succeeding, fear of getting hurt, fear of looking stupid or looking too good, fear what others might think, disbelief that we are not physically or emotionally capable. What would happen if for one moment those fears were gone and we believed that we were 100% capable? That we had all of the potential we need within us to complete and do anything we want? To me that is pure potential. We understand that the true self, the higher self, is capable of anything we want to achieve. It might take years to get there, hard work, and practice, but it is possible and already inside of us.

“When we experience the power of the Self, there is absence of fear, there is no compulsion to control, and no struggle for approval or external power.”  -- Deepak Chopra

When we are able to practice pure potentiality we lose fear and we stop looking for external or outside approval. We lose the ego. We tune inside for internal approval and drive. How do we tune inside and come to understand our own pure potential? Daily (yes daily) practice of meditation, silent sitting, time in nature, and non-judgment. “Stillness is the first requirement for manifesting your desires, because in stillness lies your connection to the field of pure potentiality that can orchestrate an infinity of details for you” –Deepak Chopra

As I said last month, when I first started silent sitting and meditating, my thoughts were more turbulent. But over time, that changed and I am more aware of my thoughts, less judgmental of them, and my brain is silent more often. Practicing non-judgment has also been profound for me, not only in meditation but in daily life. When we evaluate or label something “good”, “bad”, “ugly”, “beautiful” we are creating more thoughts for our internal dialogue. This keeps the mind active and opposite of quiet and peaceful. When we label we stop the flow of energy. Practicing non-judgment creates stillness in the mind.

In closing, I will share a personal example of how tuning in and understanding pure potential can change your life. About a year and a half ago I worked for a hospital as an occupational therapist and was running my private craniosacral therapy business on my days off. I found myself overworked and with no free time. I made the hard decision to stop working at the hospital and dive full time into my practice. Since then, or at least until reading this book, I often wondered if I had made the wrong decision. Working at the hospital was the best job I ever had and I worked hard in graduate school to become an occupational therapist. By believing that I may have made a mistake, it kept me from building my business and understanding my pure potential and my business’s pure potential. I was unconsciously holding myself back. When I started meditating on what my business could be, what I wanted it to become, and what was possible, many doors started to open. I started to see the pure potential I had and what I could create in a business. The only thing holding back the success of my business was me.

For those of you who have not read this book, I would highly recommend it. In fact, I have not even finished it because each chapter takes some time for me to process and apply the concepts into my life and work. Business owner or not, this book is a great way to look at any aspect of your life and start creating increased potential and infinite possibilities.
